Due to watching extensive amounts of Norm Abrams' New Yankee Workshop when I got into wood working, I have a fondness for biscuit joinery.
When doing a test cut recently for the coffee table I reused an existing off cut as the tester and ended up a neat cross section of what the biscuit join looks like:
In a finished joint that empty space would be all glue.
